SCT Round 1 #23 Colts Neck at #10 Toms River North

-The SCT opening round started yesterday and unlike in the last few years the Mariners did not have a bye, but they were able to show they can still be the team they have been. They scored four unanswered goals to win 4-1 and advance to round 2.

Colts Neck was able to strike first 16 minutes into the game when freshman Isa Suarez, who played in her very first varsity game, was able to score off an assist from sophomore Terri Morgan.  The Cougars were able to apply pressure for a good amount of the first half, but with eight minutes left Toms River North picked up the pace.

TRN was able to get the equalizer with five minutes left in the half when junior Alexis Garcia finished a Madison DiEugenio shot that hit the crossbar. The senior DiEugenio was ripping good shots all first half but they either hit the goal posts or junior goalie Mia Nikolic, who was solid like always, made the save. The Mariners were able to take the lead with 20 seconds left in the half when junior Kaylee Nagle put home a rebound off a ripped shot from Garcia, Nikolic made a great diving save on the initial shot but could not hold on.

"The goal woke us up a little bit and when Arli (Torres) went down we had to move some people around, but the kids really stepped up and played really well," Toms River North coach Tom Miller said. "They (Colts Neck) were dominating the center midfield for a while, but then a couple of our midfielders stepped and turned it around."

TRN did not waste any time in the second half scoring seven minutes in when DiEugenio, who was so close so many times, was finally able to put one in the back of the net off a pass from sophomore Angelinia DeCesare.  The Mariners were able to put the game out of reach shortly after when sophomore Erin Misa was able to score her first goal of the season off a pass from DiEugenio.

"I am really excited to advance. This is my senior year so it is really important to me," DiEugenio said. "I was thinking we were down and nothing to lose so just keep shooting and lucky my teammates were there to follow."

TRN senior goalie Kyran Thievon had a great game coming up with five saves, but the biggest save came two minutes after Colts Neck went up 1-0 when junior Valentina Sepulveda had a good look on goal.  A goal there would have changed the rest of the game.

"Kyran has been just coming out and grabbing corner kicks with a mess of girls around her," Miller said. "She is playing so confidently, so that helps so much. She knows it is senior year and everyone is laying it on the line."

Player of the Game : Kyran Thievon - If she could not come out to make that save on Sepulveda, unsure if TRN comes back and is able to pour it on like they did. 2-0 is a lot different then 1-0.
