Freehold Boro at Marlboro
In a dark gloomy day, with the pouring rain, Marlboro (3-3-2) was able to clinch a SCT spot as they defeated Freehold Boro (1-8) 2-0. The first 20 minutes both teams were feeling each other out, each getting a couple chances to score, then Marlboro was able to take control of the ball and applied pressure to Freehold Boro's defense.
The Mustangs were able to score their first goal 23 minutes in when sophomore Carly Guzzardo was able to rip a shot from just over 20 yards that beat Freehold Boro senior goalie Jaeleigh Tuccille. They followed that with another goal 30 minutes into the game when sophomore Sarah Gold was able to score off a rebound. Tuccille was remarkable in this game, she was able to make the initial save then saved the first rebound shot, but could not get up in time to come up with the third save.
Marlboro was able to put a lot of pressure on Tuccille, the combination of senior Olga Metelkine, senior Christina Glaser and Guzzardo kept Freehold Boro busy for the majority of the game.
"We just switched the formation and those three are very talented players and feed off each other well," Marlboro coach Marc Strumwasser said. "They are good friends off the field which helps them on the field."
Freehold Boro's best chance to score came 66 minutes in when junior Riley Turner had a one vs one with Marlboro sophomore goalie Anna Hauesser. Hauesser came off her line and was able to force Turner to make a move, which Hauesser was able to come up with the save.
"She has stepped up big time for us," Strumwasser said about Hauesser. "She made two big saves against Middletown South and her confidence is getting better and better every day. That was the key for her, that confidence boost."
With the win Marlboro advances to the SCT, unlike last year when they lost in double overtime to Lacey on the cutoff day to qualify for the tournament.
"Its really exciting getting into the SCT because last year we were really close," Guzzardo said. "It is a great feeling that we are going to have a chance and experience it."
Player of Game: Carly Guzzardo- Carly was able to score one goal but also created a lot of scoring chances for her teammates throughout the game. She is a player to keep on eye on for the next two years.
