Jackson Liberty at Jackson Memorial
The battle for bragging rights in Jackson took place this morning as Jackson Memorial hosted cross town rivals Jackson Liberty. In a hard fought game by both teams, Liberty was able to get their first victory over Memorial 1-0.
Sophomore Delaney Splathoff put in a penalty kick at the 50th minute to break the tie and score the games only goal. Liberty was awarded the penalty kick when a foul was called on Memorial senior Chloe Messner after she made a slide tackle inside the box. She cleared the ball away from the Lions attacker but the ref called the foul and awarded the penalty shot.
The first half saw a dominant Memorial team who applied all the offense for the half. Junior Renee
Wanzor along with Messner gave Liberty's defense trouble and made Liberty goalie, senior Camryn
Wiese work hard for her first shut-out of the season.
Liberty was able to create more offense in the second half then they did in the first half. The speed of
senior Alyssa Galayda and junior Chelsea Lavezzo put pressure on the Jaguar defense but sophomore
goalie Gianna Berkley was able to save everything that came her way.
"I switched up our formation. I added one in the midfield," Liberty coach Dana Young said. "I had our
outside midfielders tuck in just to give us numbers up there. Once we controlled a little bit and played
out wide we had a lot more opportunities."
Memorial picked up the pace after Liberty's goal. The Jags best chance came at the 55th minute when
Wiese came out to play the ball and the Jaguars were able to kick the ball free from her. Feeling she
had control of the ball she turned to argue with the ref which allowed the Jags to have an empty net
but the Lions defense was able to recover and clear the ball out. Weise arguing resulted in a yellow card
and required her to come off the field until the next dead ball.
"They are very strong and they constantly have my back," Weise said, speaking of her defense stepping
up. "They are always here for me and I am always there for them."
The Jaguars had several other chances after that. Messner had a free kick at the 63rd minute which
resulted in a diving save by Weise. She also came up big with 5 minutes remaining making a save off
a cross by Wanzor.
Wanzor had several chances throughout the game by beating defenders with her speed and getting
free from the midfield passing but could not beat Weise. Wanzor along with Messner made several
nice moves to get free and set up crosses but the Jaguars were unable to finish any of the plays.
My player of the game is Jackson Liberty senior Camryn Weise. Along with making great saves and
coming up with the ball whenever Memorial crossed the ball she gave great instructions to her defense
throughout the game.
"She has been performing like that since she was a freshman," Coach Young said, "As a senior and a
captain this year and the experience she has, we do not win that game if she is not in the goal."
Fantastic!
