Red Bank Regional at Ocean Twp for the Mya Cup
Every year Ocean Township Girls soccer team host the Mya Cup, a fundraiser for Mya Terry, an Ocean Township child who lost her battle to cancer at 10 years old. With a great crowd turnout to support this cause and Ocean Township Soccer Club bringing their younger teams to support, Red Bank Regional (4-1) and Ocean Township (4-2) soccer teams put on a show that resulted in a 4-3 comeback victory for Ocean Twp in double overtime.
Trailing 2-0 going into the second half, Ocean Township was able to fight back to tie and then get the victory in overtime when senior Abigail Desmarais scored the golden goal off sophomore Isabella Santucci pass at the 92nd minute.
"It was something we really wanted," Desmarais said. "We were down 2-0 in first the half and we did not give up and the crowd really helped tonight. I knew we only had a few minutes left so I knew I had to give everything."
The first half started off back and forth for the first 30 minutes until the RBR senior Ellie Lynch scored her first of three goals off an assist from junior Lelia Castell. Lynch then scored her second goal one minute later on a penatly kick to give RBR a 2-0 going into halftime.
The Spartans did not give up though and came out aggressive to start the second half. Santucci scored her first of two goals at the 45th minute after receiving a pass from senior Julia DeGeorge who was able to use her speed and great footwork to find Santucci running down the field. Santucci scored again just over a minute later to tie the game 2-2.
"We moved some things around today," Ocean Township first year coach Alex Pickett said. "We had Bella and Julia up top today and it was a good decision. They worked well off each other and fed off each other."
Ocean Township kept the pressure on and was able to take their first lead during the 66th minute when sophomore Madison Clark blasted the ball top post from about 25 yards out to put the Spartans up 3-2.
RBR did not give up though and Lynch was able to get the hat trick and tie the game at the 73rd minute off a pass from Castell again.
In the first overtime both teams had chances to end the game, but RBR goalie, freshman Harper Brechman, and Ocean Twp. goalie, senior Juliet Nies came up with big saves to force double overtime.
"This group of girls is a special group and I never had any doubt in them at all," Coach Pickett said. "They fight hard and give it to the last whistle every game."
Since it was a great game I selected two players of the games.
RBR Ellie Lynch - She scored the hattrick for RBR and fought to the very end. If you were at the game you saw her hustle to every free ball and her determination to try to get the win.
Ocean Twp Isabella Santucci - She had two goals and the assist for the game winner. Her speed gave RBR defense a hard time and freed Desmarais to make the run in the middle of the field.
"Bella really surprised me this year as a sophomore," Coach Pickett said. "She has been producing amazingly for us and I can not wait to see the rest of the season."
