Barnegat at #7 Point Boro
-Point Boro (8-0), ranked #7, moved one step closer to wrapping up B South against Barnega (5-5)t with a 3-0 victory yesterday. This marks the seventh shutout of the season for sophomore goalie Ava Bjorndahl and the tough Panthers defense.
The Panthers came out strong and had several strong scoring chances in the first 15 minutes of action. Senior Anna McCourt and sophomore Abby Hannemann used their speed and footwork to set up their teammates in the middle of the fieldfor the majority of the first half.
"I just told Madison (Bjorndahl) early in the first half to hang out at the six the ball is going to come," Point Boro Coach Mike Edolo said. "Anna has proved year in and year out that she is one of the most dangerous players. She has the will, the will to beat players, the will to be dangerous. Abby has the same thing and they are two of the most dangerous players in the conference. It makes life easy for me."
Point Boro was able to score their first goal when McCourt connected on a pass to senior Madison Bjorndahl who scored her 9th goal of the season 15 minutes into the game. The Panthers had several other chances to score over the next 15 minutes. Hannemann had a great run and beat a defender with her footwork, but the Panthers could not convert the cross. They were able to add a second goal at the 34th minute when junior Kyleigh Cilento put in a goal off a pass from senior Morgan Ippolito.
"We have been playing together since we were little kids, so our communication is always good," Hannemann said. "I always make sure I am on the sideline so I can dribble past my players and make the cross to whoever is in the middle."
The Panthers continued to control the second half and continued to move the ball all around the field to set up scoring chances. They were able to score their third goal when Cilento served a perfectly placed corner that sophomore Gabby Mellet headed into the net.
Point Boro held onto the ball majority of the game and the few times Barnegat was able to attack the Panthers defense was able to make the plays and prevent Bjorndahl from being in any difficult situatons.
"Collectively they are solid and they communicate well," Coach Edolo said. "We have good leadership with Ava and our outside backs. It is time together and that creates cohesion and that creates great communication and with Ava back there in the goal it is not easy to score goals on us."
Player of Game: This was tough so I am cheating and picking two. Anna McCourt and Abby Hannemann for their ability to create and the way they moved the ball into the right spots.
