#9 Central Regional at #4 Brick Memorial
In a battle for the top spot in A South # 4 Brick Memorial (5-1-1) defeated #9 Central Regional (5-2-1) 4-3 in a game that did not disappoint the fans. These two teams exchanged goals in a back and forth game for 80 minutes.
Brick Memorial was able to come back from trailing 3-2 by scoring two goals within about a minute of each other. Junior Mia Caruso was able to tie the game after getting a pass from junior Chloe Gellici. A minute later twin sister Lexi Caruso scored the game winning goal, her second of the game, after a blast from senior Emily DeAlmeida was deflected by Central Regional goalie, junior Erika Kangas, and Caruso was in the right spot to put in the rebound.
"It was crazy," Caruso said about the game winner. "I was just in the right place at the right time, Emily hit a great shot."
The Mustangs were able to score first 19 minutes in when Layla Marotta made a steal and was able to beat Kangas. That goal woke up Central Regional. They had a couple chances to tie it and finally did at the 23rd minute when senior Hannah Lewis, who scored a hat trick, received a pass from junior Samantha Versnal. Versnal created problems for Brick Memorials defense all game by creating plays with her speed and passing, setting her teammates up for scoring opportunities.
"They gave us fits and she (Central Regional Coach Marykate Sullivan) is doing a great job over there," Brick Memorial Coach Billy Caruso said. "Their midfield game gave us fits"
Brick Memorial was able to take a 2-1 lead when Caruso scored her first goal on a penalty kick after a Mustang was taken down in the box, the second foul in just over a minute. The Eagles did not let that get to them as they scored the equalizer in the final minute of the first half when Lewis scored off a pass from Versnal for her second assist.
Central Regional came out strong in the second half and scored in the 47th minute when Lewis completed her hat trick off a nice pass from junior Emma Harmon to go up 3-2. The following 18 minutes was a back and forth attack by both teams until the Mustangs got the equalizer at the 64th minute.
Brick Memorial was able to tighten up their defense in the last ten minutes as Central Regional stepped up their attack and Lewis fought her determined to score her fourth goal to send the game to overtime, but the Mustangs and senior goalie Hayley Tighe held them off to get the win and take control of first place in A South.
"She is a stud we needed to find her immediatley," Coach Caruso said about Lewis. "Hayley has been playing awesome for us. Was that the best defensive game we played no, was that the toughest defensive game we played, I think so."
Players of Game: This game was so good I have two players of the game. Samantha Versnal from Central for creating so many scoring chances and setting up Lewis for two of her goals. Brick Memorial Lexi Caruso for knocking in the game winner.
